Sloppy Win

The Barons won a sloppy 5-3 decision over the  Canmore Eagles last night at the Casman Centre. While not the prettiest win in Barons history it was still a very valuable 2 points in the chase for playoffs. As we are finding out their are no easy games in Jan/Feb as all teams try to lock down playoff positions.

Markus Gerbrandt had 2 goals (28th and 29th) and an assist and linemate Killian Hutt scored his 20th of the season while adding 2 assists. Mike Puddifant scored his first AJHL goal in the second period of the game. The final shots were 28-18for the MOB and the Barons out chanced Canmore 14-7 in the game.

Congrats to Shannon Nash and the Oil Barons organization on the completion of another successful Dream Home Lottery. The Lottery is a major fundraiser for the organization and we appreciate the support we receive from the community. A shout out to the Oil Barons front office and Juanita Wood for the support and help during the whirlwind last few weeks.

Captain Carson Cooper earned a 1 game suspension for picking up his 3rd instigator minor of the season. Tough news for the team as we are already shorthanded up front heading into Lloydminster Thursday.

Did You Know

Brett Printz had 2 assists last night and has 9 points in his last 9 games.

Mitchell Board earned an assist to run his point streak to 4 games.

January Swoon Continues

The Barons continued a tough January with a 4-3 loss to the Brooks Bandits last night at the Casman Center. Once again Barons special team play was the culprit as the power play struggled at a 1 for 10 clip and the penalty kill gave up 2 goals in 8 chances.

The Mob started slowly as we gave up 8 scoring chances in the first period. Brody Hoffman kept the team in the game early. The final scoring chances were 12 - 12 but the team defence was marginal at best.

The Power Play struggles in the last 5 games are very clear, you have to put the puck on net to have success. The Barons had 17 shots blocked on the PP last evening and missed the net 11 other times.

Did You Know

Mitchell Board has scored in 3 straight games and now has 22 goals on the season.

Barons top 4 point producers are struggling Killian Hutt has only 1 point in last 5 games while Carson Cooper, Markus Gerbrandt and Justin Rose only have 2 points each in the last 5 games.

Last night was only the 4th game in 49 this season that the MOB trailed entering the 3rd period.

Strange Weekend

After a win Friday in Bonnyville the Barons dropped a 2-1 decision to Bonnyville Saturday. The team played very well but once again had difficulty finishing around the net. Goaltender Tanner Jaillet had a solid effort but the team could only bury one goal despite creating 16 scoring chances.

Looking for a chance at redemption Sunday in Sherwood Park the Mob were once again dealt a cruel blow as the game was cancelled due to poor ice conditions. Its always frustrating to travel all that distance and end up not playing but it is what it is!

The down side now is trying to schedule a return date in a very busy last 4 weeks of the season.

The Oil Barons and Spruce Grove played an intense playoff type battle last night at the Casman Center with the Saints prevailing 2-1 in overtime. The game featured some great goal tending on both sides and solid team play at both ends of the rink.

Mitchell Board scored for the MOB in the first and the game continued at 1-0 till 11 minutes left in the 3rd when the Saints tied it. A strong effort by the Barons as we out shot the Saints 34-27.

The team now sits 5 points behind the Saints for 1st place with 1 game in hand so we have our work cut out for us in chasing down first place.

Newcomer Mike Puddifant looked very solid and picked up 2 assists in his Oil Barons debut.

Home Loss

The Oil Barons closed the weekend with a 4-3 loss at home to Sherwood Park. After falling behind 4-0 the team rallied to make a game of it but could not get the equalizer late in the game.

A very sub par weekend for the team, once again the offence struggled and the special teams were down right horrendous. We were very perimeter and tried to play a finesses game when more sandpaper was required.

Congrats to Brody Hoffman who committed to the University of Vermont for the 2012/13 season.

Overtime Thriller

The Oil Barons captured a hard fought 5-4 overtime victory last night over Sherwood Park at the Casman Center. The team fell behind 3-1 early in the first but clawed back in an exciting offensive battle. Rookie goalie Tanner Jaillet struggled early and was replaced by Brody Hoffman late in the first period. Once again the offence created lots of shots (49) but struggled finishing some chances.

Carson Cooper scored the overtime winner tapping in a Colton Parayko slap shot that came to rest on the goal line. Newcomer John Dunbar picked up his first point as an Oil Baron drawing an assist on the winning goal.

Congrats to Sweden for capturing the recent World Junior Championship. Associate Coach Bjorn Kinding hasn't stopped smiling since the win by his former countrymen. (he hasn't been able to smile for 31 years!)

Win for the New Year

The team returned to action after a 13 day layoff and continued their winning ways with a 5-0 victory in St. Albert. A solid performance by the squad although the rust was evident. The offence struggled controlling the puck and finishing opportunities. Brody Hoffman garnered his 3rd shutout of the season and lowered his goals against average to 1.93.

The MOB have now won 5 consecutive games and are 16-1-1 in their last 18 games.

We expect a tougher test when we face Sherwood Park twice at the Casman Centre this weekend. Sherwood Park has a very potent offence so these games could be barn burners.

The MOB penalty killers have killed 18 straight penalties and have not allowed a pp goal against in the last 5 games. Earlier in the season the team killed 29 straight penalties spanning 7 games.

Cole Penner had a highlight reel shorthanded goal in last night's game. That is the teams 8th shorthanded goal this season.

Back from the Break

Happy New Year to everyone it's great to be back to hockey. The players returned to practise on the evening of Dec 30th and we eagerly anticipate the start of the second half.

Christmas was good to all and the players seem rested and reinvigorated for a run at the Enerflex Cup. While it was great to see family and friends, work was required during the break. Assistant Coach Tom Keca and I travelled to Boston to scout 24 Tier One Midget teams and 2 of our scouts attended the Mac's midget tournament in Calgary all in an effort to find players for next season. Our Trainer Peter Spiers travelled to Mexico during the break but it's doubtful we would receive any players from his trip.

Good news on the injury front as Kevin Lacroix had the screws removed from his ankle and is hopeful to return to the ice within 2 weeks.
